The Washington Post |
Write about the nation’s 50 million schoolchildren and how violence natural disasters, the pandemic, poverty, racism and political turmoil shapes their education. Focus on marginalized groups, including Spanish-speaking families. In spring 2020, volunteered to be in the field for Team America in Michigan, covering the pandemic, politics and far-right extremists. Have traveled all over the country -- from Puerto Rico to the Bronx to Muskogee, Okla. -- to report education stories. Have covered several school shootings, anchoring the first-day coverage of the Parkland shooting. Previously assigned to cover some of the nation’s largest school systems as the Virginia reporter, elevating local stories about school segregation and the debate over standardized testing to the front page. Broke news on transgender student issues, writing two dozen stories over eight months on legislation and litigation, including a lawsuit that was taken up by the Supreme Court.

As the City Hall reporter, reported on a mayoral transition that followed a tumultuous year at City Hall. Covered an ongoing federal probe of city business that resulted in the indictment of the police chief and the departure of the mayor from city politics, garnering an award for breaking news coverage. Investigated the city’s shoddy oversight of cash flow and the mayor’s city credit card that led to new laws and policies. Earlier posts were as a breaking news and night reporter, covering a mass shooting at a mental hospital and a flash flood that killed four. Wrote enterprise stories on teenage murder convicts and an investigative story on gun control that prompted the state to send additional mental health records to the national database used to conduct background checks for potential gun buyers.
