Director of Engagement
Student Press Law Center |
Advanced the partnerships, program strategies and effectiveness of a legal/journalism nonprofit.
Among the breakthroughs I initiated and brought to fruition:
* Diversified range of grants and increased individual donors.
* Proposed and negotiated an agreement with Automattic (parent company of WordPress) to provide long-term pro bono redesign, free hosting, state-of-the-art security and VIP concierge back-end service for the SPLC.org website.
* Obtained approval for the organization to receive up to $10,000 a month in free Google ads.
* Researched and drafted report on how college news organizations can pursue financial stability.
The Student Press Law Center is the only legal services nonprofit organization in the nation squarely focused on protecting and advancing the First Amendment rights of student journalists. All services to student journalists and their advisers are free of charge.
My role included broadening the base of partners, supporters, journalists and volunteer attorneys. I have a leadership role in our initiatives, internships, edited key stories, website updates and reports and social media, leveraging multiple platforms.
I championed the role of quality journalism in a democratic society and thrive in a multi-generational, mission and deadline driven work environment.

Senior Project Director
American Society of News Editors |
Working with nation's leading newsroom executives, my role was both strategic and operational - and always on deadline. It blended leadership and supervision with hands-on work that required discretion, judgment and refined skills. Highlights:
• Catalyst for a national youth journalism program. Launched in 2000, it grew into a half-dozen entrepreneurial projects that attracted $12 million in grants and program revenue.
• Program management includes contracting and financial reporting with five major public universities and procurements with multiple vendors and contractors.
• My team created and launched an online hub for 4,000 youth multimedia news sites.
• We also developed what was then the web's most frequently visited youth journalism education site
• Skills include staff management, leadership, research, editing, branding and engagement. One example is overseeing the creation of, and developing content for Sunshine Week, a national, non-partisan good government initiative. As game users win, they're invited to post a badge on Facebook or Twitter.
• Smart work ethic, creativity and clam demeanor came in handy during more than 75 conventions, conferences and special events that involved leaders in the news industry, government, technological and social change.
• Shaped a landmark, four-year undertaking on journalism credibility and a publication on how news organizations can localize international events.
Skills:
With deep roots in journaism nonprofits and newsrooms, including serving as managing editor of a 62-person newsroom, I have expertise in focusing and bringing out the best in my colleagues, writing and administering grants and developing giving campaigns. Hands-on work overseeing cause-oriented website design, social media content/analytics, newsletters and designing multiple education and training projects. Get in touch to see how I can advance your organization's goals and impact.
Fun fact: As a college student, I organized a 2,500 person parade across the Brooklyn Bridge known as "The March for Decent Transit." A dozen city and state elected officials glad-handed marchers as they reached Manhattan, where they heard suggestions on how to best fix the subways.
