Adán Quan is a rising fourth-year at Northwestern, double-majoring in Journalism and Legal Studies and minoring in Asian American Studies. He has experience with print, audio and multiplatform journalism. Adán's reporting interests include legal reporting, the federal judiciary, press freedom, civic engagement, and culturally-aware feature reporting focusing on underreported communities. His work has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered and has won awards such as a regional Edward R. Murrow Large Market Radio prize as part of a wider series. Throughout Adán's early career, he has exclusively worked in nonprofit media, reporting for hyperlocal East Lansing Info and Michigan Public’s Stateside.
Adán completed his Medill journalism residency with Midstory, a nonprofit Toledo-based media thinkhub that focuses on progressing the narrative of the Midwest. He also recently started at Northwestern Magazine, Northwestern’s alumni magazine, and is interning with the Center for Media and Democracy for Summer 2026.
He specializes in legal and document analysis and research, and plans to attend law school after a few years in the media industry.
Collaborate with staff to fact-check, research and write stories for magazine’s quarterly issues. Adapt content for online publication. Maintain alumni/donor database records and support editorial operations.
Conducted weekly pre-interviews, researched, and booked guests for daily show. Wrote two daily full-show and podcast posts per week, and coordinated with host on host-preps and briefings. Reported and produced eight-minute audio postcard on MSU Campus Archaeology Program. Produced 21-minute episode titled “Gen Z's political power” as a part of special election podcast series, “What the Vote?” on Gen-Z in 2024 elections, reported entirely by Gen-Z interns. Created promotional materials for series. Episode achieved 8,000+ downloads in less than a week, and more through streaming/broadcast. 1,000 downloads is generally considered a successful podcast for a station of Michigan Public’s size. “Gen Z's political power” nationally featured on NPR’s All Things Considered on Oct. 19, 2024.
Completed a journalism residency with Midstory, a 501(c)(3) non-profit thinkhub that progresses the narrative of the Midwest by incubating bright, diverse and interdisciplinary thinkers to exchange ideas and envision the future of the region through multimedia storytelling and solutions-oriented research. Pitch and report stories weekly and contribute writing and research for long-term and grant-funded projects. Assisted with aspects of multimedia, socials, graphics, audio. Produced stories combining historical research and traditional reporting on Detroit’s Chinatown, Midwest rail transit, Chicago’s Pedway. Gained experience in social media, multimedia, and data presentation tools.
Wrote and pitched 16 stories. Covered community outreach and support events as well as various features and news. Invited as a reporter following participation in ELi’s introductory journalism program for high school students. Only high school journalist on otherwise professional staff, including PhDs, MSJs, and other local journalists.
Asked by founder to serve as youth/student voice on Board of Directors. Learned about nonprofit management, board meetings, and fundraising for a news organization. Met quarterly. Served on board after East Lansing Info lost its executive director and managing editor, resulting in summer shutdown. Helped search for and evaluate candidates for both positions and resumed publication. Met monthly for nearly a year.
