Are you a journalist able to dig into global development policy, spanning everything from breaking news to in-depth features? Are you full of ideas, with a track record of delivering exclusive stories? Do you understand development issues as they relate to institutions ranging from government agencies to international NGOs to philanthropic foundations? You are a journalist who can dig into a beat, find out what insiders are talking about, and bring those compelling stories to a niche audience of development professionals. You know policy and understand how global development works – or doesn’t. You can quickly cultivate a source network inside relevant institutions and have a nose for the kinds of tensions, leadership transitions, funding and procurement quandaries, and other situations that could make for a compelling story for your niche audience.

You thrive in an environment where you’re supported by a team and able to work both independently and collaboratively with reporters whose beats overlap with yours. You know how to manage competing priorities and smoothly juggle work and communicate across time zones.

Job Location: Global remote position

What you’ll do here
If you’ve read this far, we know that you want to know more. Devex is seeking a correspondent to report for development professionals. You’ll be responsible for writing exclusive stories, including a mixture of breaking news and bigger-picture features.

You’ll come to weekly editorial meetings with pitches, brief other Devex reporters on key issues when needed, and be able to talk about these issues comfortably during panels and webinars.

Your first year will look a little bit like this…

In your first 90 days, you’ll start cultivating a strong source network and get up to speed on key institutions such as the World Bank, U.N. agencies such as the World Food Programme, World Health Organization, USAID, Gates Foundation, as well as international and local implementing partners. You’ll stay on top of trends across the development space and specifically the Global South, from food and climate change, to philanthropy and humanitarian issues.

You’ll also develop a good understanding of your role within the wider Devex news team and work on stories collaboratively with other reporters, the production and multimedia team, and the social media engagement team.

After your first year, you’ll have a strong grasp of development news and institutions. You’ll have solid sources at relevant institutions and their funders. You regularly write exclusive stories and have become a respected voice in the sector.
