Job Description

I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.

The Senior Editor will oversee People’s crime vertical, producing compelling news and feature stories that are relevant to our readers and meet our high-quality, journalistic standards. The SE will manage our team of crime writers and digital editors, working closely with them to brainstorm news coverage, assign reporting and edit copy. This position will also be responsible for editing long-form digital stories and crime content on People.com.

The SE will collaborate with editors from other verticals as well as with the People photo and design departments to oversee crime coverage across all platforms ( People Every Day Podcast, and Special Projects groups).

As part of our ongoing newsroom efforts, the SE will aim to produce content that is inclusive and reflective of our diverse audience and to support staffers in writing and editing with sensitivity.

This SE will also participate in the development of television projects in the crime vertical that bring People’s content to screen. 

The position requires excellent editorial judgment and text editing skills along with a good eye for photo and design and the ability to organize, manage and multitask in an extremely fast-paced environment.

Job Requirements

III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.

Education:

B.A. or equivalent experience

Experience:

Minimum of 7 years in journalism, writing or editing experience, and 1+ years of managerial experience

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Excellent writing and editing skills

Excellent organizational skills, ability to oversee many, constantly changing elements during a magazine close

A good eye for photos and design, ability to work smoothly with photo and design editors

Strong creativity and a sense of humor

A passion for telling compelling and moving stories

Ability to work well in a team amid a very fast-paced environment
