Job Description

Scope: The Photo Editor, with direction from the Art Director and Editor-in-Chief, helps to conceive photographic approaches to features and departments. They should be a gifted visual storyteller with the ability to produce different genres of photography and think about how photography can stand out on all platforms. Not only will they work independently, but they should be open to collaborate, brainstorm ideas and problem solve with a team. They will research, locate, commission, select, and secure the rights to publish the highest possible quality photographs for publication in Sierra magazine's print, web, and digital replica editions. They also manage photography submissions for each print issue as well as web exclusives.


Job activities include but are not limited to:

  1. In consultation with the Art Director, decides which photographers should be asked to contribute, and what additional photography is necessary. Conceptualizes and produces two to three original photo essay features each year. Schedules art meetings with the Art Department and editors. Works with Art Director, Editors and outside freelancers to create and source content for multimedia web content, including photographs, video or audio as needed.
  2. Commissions photo shoots as per Art Director's or Senior Associate Art Director's instructions, finds appropriate photographers, finds locations, arranges for models and/or props, makes travel arrangements as needed and follows through to make sure all materials are delivered on time. Secures location permits when necessary. Negotiates fees and usage rights for photography and reaches agreements on the terms for their use by Sierra. When needed helps art direct, or photograph, in-house photo shoots.
  3. Manages digital photos and submissions. Researches, creates and manages lightboxes on stock sites and for individual photographers. Investigates and tracks down photos of individuals needed to tell specific stories in the magazine. Sources content for Sierra's online slideshows. Manages licensing, credits and specifications. Sources low or no-cost photos to supplement print content on the website, and handles licensing for all such photos.
  4. Assists the Senior Assoc. Art Director in creating a visual reference document for products. Requests all product samples necessary for in-house photo shoot. Creates and maintains a log of usage rights, photo credits, invoices, costs and captions for each issue. Creates and maintains a second log of usage rights, credits and captions for the web and digital editions. Develops and maintains a database of photographers for use by Sierra and other departments of the Sierra Club.
  5. Represents Sierra, develops photographer relationships, and stays current on trends by attending photo conferences/festivals and participating in local photography industry events. Advises other departments of the Sierra Club with photo needs, as time allows.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

  • Extensive experience in art, photography, journalism or communications or equivalent combination of experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in reviewing photographs to determine photographic merit in both digital and non-digital formats and a proven record of delivering accurate, complex visual storytelling on long and short deadlines. Fast, resourceful photo researcher with a wide knowledge of photo sources and excellent organizational skills including database management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be self–starter, organized, able to work independently with ability to multi-task.
  • Knowledge of Photoshop, and familiarity with databases and FPT systems.
  • Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.
