The Coverage Editor, Communities and Engagement will focus on connecting, engaging, and deepening relationships with communities in Philadelphia, by producing experiential content across a variety of platforms. Part of the newly formed Communities & Engagement desk, the Coverage Editor, Communities and Engagement works hand-in-hand with the Senior Editor of the desk, and thinks strategically about how the desk can best collaborate with product and audience to better serve communities in Philadelphia.
The C&E desk is highly collaborative, and the Coverage Editor, Communities and Engagement will serve as an important part of the team, helping to forge a style of community-centered, participatory journalism unique to the Inquirer.
What You Will Do:
Foster trust and build relationships between the C&E Desk and communities by developing and growing a portfolio of experiential content that encompasses a variety of forms, both virtual and IRL.
Plan and coordinate daily, weekly and monthly engagement efforts, and work closely with the Senior Editor to establish and maintain the
desk’s quarterly “Soapbox Salon”— 60-75 community leaders and members who were part of the desk’s initial listening tour and whose
ongoing participation helps co-define and co-design our efforts.
With communities, establish feedback loops that deepen and maintain engagement, and offer insights and learnings for editorial, audience,
marketing, and product.
Develop benchmarks for community participation in events (virtual and IRL), establish and track measures of impact, growth, and audience
change for experiential content.
Work with marketing on strategic partnerships with BIPOC organizations, universities, and community groups.
Partner with the audience and product teams to identify and develop unique desk initiatives with community growth in mind.
Edit freelance and contributor content; edit staff content on an as-needed basis.
Coordinate translation process across desks; produce and publish translated work; curate translated pieces for weekly newsletter.
What We Are Looking For:
A strong commitment to community engagement, deep listening, and centering community voices and experiences.
A service-minded journalist who knows Philadelphia understands the historic and ongoing trauma and barriers in many of its communities, and
is committed to producing journalistic content that goes beyond mere representation.
A sophisticated and innovative digital communicator who also understands the value of face-to-face and in-person relationship- and
community-building.
A strategic thinker who can articulate and execute a clear vision for journalistic engagement teamwide, and adjust that vision as news, staffing,
and changing audience needs merit.
A big-picture, big-story thinker with an eye for detail and a heart for teamwork.
