Justice and Equity Editor
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is looking for an experienced journalist to lead a new reporting team focused on one of the most important and enduring issues facing our community: Justice and equity.
The mission is to assure we are reporting in a powerful, thoughtful way on issues ranging from public safety and criminal justice to housing, poverty, child care, civil rights and more. Rather than focusing on turn-of-the-screw developments, or strictly breaking news, the aim is to examine underlying issues and problems that drive inequity and stand in the way of progress. The team is charged with exposing shortcomings of government and related agencies, of course, but also with identifying potential solutions and elevating issues and diverse voices from all corners of our community.
In short, we want to tell relevant, thoughtful stories in a nuanced way that recognizes the interconnected nature of our challenges, holds officials to account for making improvements, reflects the everyday experiences of residents, and helps us grow our audience by broadening what we cover and how we do it.
This editor will directly oversee a team of reporters, including those focused on underserved communities and public safety, and help lead a Wisconsin-wide team focused on such topics.
This would involve working closely with editors and reporters that touch on related areas, be it local government, education or social services.
The successful applicant will have experience in covering these issues with depth and context, as well as the ability to identify strong stories, present them with depth and clarity, and use multiple platforms and social media to maximize their impact.
She or he should be motived by the power of journalism to make a difference and have a passion for telling stories quickly when needed, in-depth when called for, always with accuracy.
Gannett Co., Inc. is a proud equal opportunity employer. We are a drug free, EEO employer committed to a diverse workforce. We will consider all qualified candidates regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity, family responsibilities, disability, education, political affiliation, or veteran status.
