Job Description

The New Republic is seeking a Washington-based staff writer to help us launch an exciting new project. The ideal candidate has above all else a nose for news: a hunger to get scoops, to chase existing stories and advance them, and to pursue unique reporting angles on developing stories, all in the service of helping to shape how political news in Washington is framed and understood.

TNR is the country’s flagship liberal opinion magazine, but understand clearly: This is a reporting job. You need to wake up every day eager to seek out the sources who will enable you to unearth new information and to go tell readers what you’ve learned.

The typical workweek will be Sunday to Thursday rather than Monday to Friday, although we will try to arrange things so that a full day isn’t often required on Sundays. The minimum salary for this role is $90,000. The position is covered by the collective-bargaining agreement between The New Republic and the NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, AFL-CIO. This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C. You can live in Virginia or Maryland, but you’ll be expected to be on the Hill when Congress is in session.

To apply, please submit your résumé and a cover letter explaining why you’re right for this job. The cover letter should not only reflect your abilities as a writer, but also be tailored to TNR and show an understanding of our sensibility and history. Please also include links to five of your best clips of varying lengths, or a link to your portfolio.

The New Republic is committed to diversity and encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, LGBTQ people, people of color, people with criminal records, veterans, and people with disabilities.

Job Requirements

You will have at least two to three years’ experience reporting on politics in Washington; you will have spent some or perhaps all of that time on Capitol Hill. You have deep sourcing among Hill Democrats; within the Democratic operative world; and in the community of liberal think tanks, nonprofits, and advocacy organizations. You will be expected to file three short web articles during a typical day, as well as some less timely material that we can bank for future use.
