Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE Inc. Business Media is looking for an editorial assistant that will support staff while reporting and writing their own stories, ideally contributing one to two longer reported articles per week. The editorial assistant may also file a “quick hit” of Inc. Business Media-related news every day (or most days when news and workload allow) to a designated editor. Ideally, these are not aggregated news stories but quick and original reporting.
This role will report to the Marketing and Sales desk, which covers everything business leaders need to know about getting their company's message out into the world.
Editorial assistants will support interns and help the editorial (and sometimes events or audience) team with ad-hoc tasks.
The editorial assistant will report and find subjects for the Front of Book and conduct full “inventory interviews” with said subjects. The FOB inventory should be diverse in race, ethnicity, industry, gender, and provide valuable content for FOB editors to pull from for the assistant’s own print assignments or content to pass off to other reporters.
This position is represented by the Inc. and Fast Company union, the Writers Guild of America-East.
Salary range: $61,000 - $67,100 + bonus eligible. Compensation may vary based on relevant experience, skills, industry, and education.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
Develop relationships with organizations that produce Inc. Business Media-related news (SBA, chamber, etc.) to get release ahead of time; monitor other related news via signing up for press releases from relevant agencies/organizations, keeping track of data drops, and networking with PR people and communications staffers.
Report out and maintain an inventory for Front of Book by conducting interviews with an array of interesting entrepreneurs; write up interesting content into a short paragraph with contact information and organize by FOB feature type and share periodically with FOB editor.
Support intern onboarding and conduct weekly 30-minute check-ins.
Send out daily traffic report, upload weekly audio scripts to SpokenLayer, and check mail@inc.com—or onboards/hands off these tasks to interns.
Write quick hits every day (may vary depending on workload).
File 1-2 longer enterprise/service stories per week covering marketing and sales topics.
Complete various tasks as needed for other editorial staff or occasionally audience and event teams during busy seasons.
Participate in Inc.-wide packages like Female Founders, Inc. 5000, and Best Industries.
Pitch longer print features and assist with reporting or fact-checking for magazine when needed.
Assist columnist desk with compiling and analyzing data when needed.
Work with the audience team to write stories based on search engine patterns.
